Hancock Neighborhood Nature and Wildlife

I found a silver lining in the long pandemic lockdown days by deeply exploring my neighborhood - walking, taking in, and photographing the nature and history it has to offer. Austin’s Hancock neighborhood is sandwiched between Hyde Park to the north and the University of Texas to the south. Smack dab in the middle lies the historic Hancock Golf Course, which is divided in half by Waller Creek, one of Austin’s major urban creeks. As the photos below will show, it is filled with a rich variety of wildlife.

The Creek cuts a tree-lined corridor through the active course, providing a haven for wildlife (and photographers). I try to be a friend to all who occupy the space, giving a wide berth to golfers and their game while allowing the birds, squirrels, and turtles the distance and respect they deserve.

I found many other photo opportunities waiting in the streetside gardens and xeriscape environments my neighbors maintain, and in the trees above them. I was also often able to find interesting subjects to photograph simply by stepping into my backyard, and you’ll find a surprising diversity of subjects that lurked but a few steps out my back door.

I hope you enjoy these photos! You may also want to explore the main photo galleries on the site, which include themes focused on Austin, nature, and a variety of others. Prints and framed prints are available for all you see. Cheers!
